The removal of the amino group (-NH2) from an
unwanted amino acid. This is the
nitrogen-containing part, and it is converted
into ammonia, uric acid, or urea (depending
on the type of animal) to be excreted in the
urine. In vertebrates, deamination occurs in
the liver.
